FRESH THURSDAY is a regular event showcasing exciting new music alongside lots of candles, board games and a homecooked slap up dinner.
This gig presents two of the UK’s most interesting solo composers performers Maja Bugge and Theo Alexander.
Maja Bugge is a Norwegian cellist, composer and cello teacher based in Lancaster, UK. Since 1998 she has created a large body of work both as a solo artist and in collaboration with others. Her works has been commissioned by Manchester Jazz festival, Lancaster Arts, Full of Noises, the National Theatre Oslo and Jazz North. She says of her work “All my work is about an attempt for dialogue; a dialogue between the cello and a site, a text, an image, a movement, a space. All my work as a composer and performer is concerned with this dialogue.”
“Imaginative Vitality” – Julian Cowley, The Wire
Theo Alexander is a Chinese-British composer who writes energetic, intricate music using piano, tape loops and synthesisers. Preoccupied by themes of memory, repetition, and decadence, his music is often ecstatic, splicing melodic patterns together in complex and affecting structures of sound. His approach is driven by a desire to subvert the acoustic qualities of the piano with electronic counterparts.
“These pieces feel both beautiful and intense… These patterns and progressions have been finding their way into my dreams lately, which makes a certain amount of sense. This music feels calm, but relentless at the same time”
